World 101

Hello all. Once again I’ve stumbled across a new resource. I always get excited finding well done resource materials and this one is well done.  I’m never really sure if others already know about it. So if you have heard about World 101- that’s great. If not, I hope you will check it out. While this resource is mostly relevant to the World Geography curriculum, there is something here for World History, US History, and Economics teachers too.

World 101 is produced by the Council on Foreign Relations and includes two libraries – Regions or Global Era Issues.

The Regions highlighted are defined a little differently than those in our World Geo course, but the overview videos of the six highlighted regions are incredible. Just the reference to different regions than those in the curriculum is an opportunity to discuss the concept of regions with students. Geography teachers in both conceptual and regional courses could utilize these videos. These overview videos would be especially helpful in the conceptual course to provide regional background information. In addition to an overview video for each region, the site also includes text/pictorial information about each region’s Modern History- People & Society- Politics – Economics- Geopolitics- U.S. Foreign Policy.  These features have been completed for three of the six regions highlighted on the website- Sub-Saharan Africa, South & Central Asia, and East Asia & Pacific.

In the library on Global Era Issues are videos about:

  • Monetary Policy which applies to Unit 4 of Economics
  • Terrorism which could be used in Unit 11 of World History and Unit 5 of Conceptual US History
  • Globalization which applies to Unit 5 of Conceptual World Geography and Unit 10 of Regional World Geography
  • Climate Change could be used in Unit 4 of Conceptual World Geography
  • Migration could be used in Unit 5 of Conceptual World Geography

Enjoy and happy planning.
